The Mortal Instruments

Written By: Marie

The Mortal Instruments is a series of young adult fantasy novels written by Cassandra Clare. The series follows Clary Fray as she learn about her true heritage and discovers a new world called the Shadow World with a variety of creatures where she makes friends with Jace Herondale, Alec Lightwood, Isabelle Lightwood, Magnus Bane. Along the way she learns the truth about her mother, Jocelyn Fray, and her mother’s friend Luke Garroway, with her friend Simon Lewis beside her.

There are many creatures in the Shadow World, the most important being the Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters, also known as Nephilim, are part angel and part human warriors created by the Angel Raziel who keeps control among the Demons and Downworlders (part demons). They can apply Runes to their Skins with a device called a Steele and these Runes give them special abilities, for example one gives them extra angelic power, on is for healing, another for love and one for strength, among others.

Downworlders include Werewolves, Vampires, Warlocks and Faeries. Werewolves, also known as Lycanthropes or Children of the Moon, are humans infected with a demonic disease, like all Downworlders, and have the ability to transform into wolves and have inhuman strength and enhanced abilities. Vampires, also known as the Children of the Night, are considered dead, as their bodies are no longer alive. Their un-departed human souls live inside their own reanimated corpses, kept intact by the demon disease and energy. They appear very thin and malnourished, do not breath or have a heartbeat, like the usual vampire they drink blood, are immortal and have enhanced speed, strength and senses.

Warlocks, also known as Lilith’s Children, are immortal and are the offspring of demons and humans and they tend to have an unusual trait, ranging from strange eyes to bat wings and reptilian body parts. They are the only Downworlders who can use magic, which can be developed and become more powerful over time. Faeries, also known as the Fair Folk or Fey, are a cunning immortal race that has both angelic and demonic blood, making them both beautiful and malevolent. Their skin appears to be one of various pastel colours, including hues of blue, green, violet and pearl, and their eyes are as clear as glass. They possess unnatural swiftness and grace and some have kaleidoscope coloured butterfly wings and have very old and powerful magic.

Angels also appear in this book, they are winged celestial beings who serve as messengers of God, guardians of his creations and soldiers in his eternal war against the inhabitants of Hell. Little is known about the Angels but they have big bird-like wings and glow with heavenly fire and are immortal with pure spirits. They possess superhuman strength and time are perceived differently by angels compared to humans. There are also Fallen Angels who have been cast out of Heaven for their rebellion and have sided with Lucifer against God.

The first book in the series has been adapted into a movie, releases in 2013, directed by Harald Zwart and stars Lily Collins as Clary, Robert Sheehan as Simon, Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace, Kevin Zegers as Alec, Jemima West as Isabelle, Godfrey Gao as Magnus, Aidan Turner as Luke, Lena Heady as Jocelyn and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Valentine. The Film has quite a few differences from the book so I recommend you read the book first but both are worth getting your hands on.
